Business Etiquette: Rules of Good Business Attire

When employed in a professional environment, business etiquette dictates the use of particular business attire. Wearing the correct business attire for going on and conducting interviews, client appointments and staff meetings is essential in portraying positive business cultures and a confident, professional appearance. If done correctly, peers and clients alike will feel secure in the knowledge that you can conduct yourself accordingly. However, wearing the correct business attire for particular occasions may seem like a tricky prospect at times. So, it is very important to become familiar with the business etiquette guidelines for dressing appropriately at work or for work related functions.

Dressing for Various Business Cultures

In today’s modern world, gone are the days of the standard business suit as the only acceptable business attire for professionals. Many of today’s businesses have adopted a more casual business attire. Some have gone to casual Fridays where business casual is the norm on Fridays only. Others still have gone to business casual as their standard dress code every day of the week. A few companies have even gone to casual attire, allowing jeans, T-shirts and the like in the work place.

The savvy business person will be aware of the particular business cultures and dress for success within them. The key is to adhere to the business attire with sophistication without being overly formal or overly casual. You want to fit in but also dress to impress regardless of the business cultures. When in doubt, though, err on the side of caution and opt for more formal rather than more casual business attire.

Business Etiquette for Business Casual Environments

When choosing business attire for a business casual environment, there are some guidelines you should be aware of. For men, according to business etiquette, the following articles of clothing are generally acceptable attire:

  • Khaki, blue, black or grey slacks
  • Pant materials that are more casual such as Dockers
  • Polo shirts
  • Button down, long sleeved shirts in plain colors or subtle patterns
  • Sweaters, V-neck or with a button down shirt beneath
  • Casual blazers
  • Sport coats
  • Brown or black shoes

For women the following business attire is suitable for business casual workplaces:

  • Khaki, blue, black or grey slacks or skirts that are knee length and longer
  • Pull over and button down blouses in solid colors or subtle patterns
  • Turtle neck sweaters
  • Blazers
  • Low heeled pumps, stylish ankle boots or lace up shoes with a heel
