helps you gain clarity on what you want and writing it down
crystalises them in your mind which gives it more energy towards
their achievement. Many experienced experts say that it is
the foundation in which many dreams are built. It helps direct
the conscious and subconscious towards realising your ideals.
Unlocking your potential
Much of the human potential remains dormant until it is awaken
by necessity or inspiration. What if goal setting is like
the key to opening the door of life that’s been locked
for so long. Once opened, it unleashes an abundance of energy
to have whatever it is you want. The wisdom that comes out
of any personal experience prepares you for goal setting.

setting is about shaping the course of your life that goes
beyond your present limitations.
Techniques for Goal setting
Goal setting techniques are used by successful athletes,
business people and top level achievers in all fields. Planning
for Success is an important component that gives us a clear
target to work towards. Here are some tips that will get you
started.
Dream
The first step towards successful goal setting is to realize
that you can go beyond your so-called limitations and know
that you are in control of your life .You don’t need
any special qualifications, certificates or degrees and all
you need is just your imagination. So ask yourself if you
knew that you could not fail what will you dare to be, do
or have?
Visualise
This is a powerful step in any goal setting process. Decide
how you'll focus your life, and make your vision clear, vibrant,
compelling. See yourself already in possession of the goal.
Visualising your goal starts the process of attraction as
it sensitizes your mind to the resources needed to attain
your goal. It is the very thing that keeps you late up at
night and gets you up early in the morning. This step is the
very element that breaths life into your goals. Here is a
tip: Collect some photographs of your goals from brochures,
magazines or take some pictures of your desired goal. Create
a collage and post it in a place where you’ll always
see it and let this inspire your daily actions.
Write it down
Create a “wish list”, write down your goals.
As mentioned before, this act crystallizes them and gives
them more energy. This physical action transmits a signal
to your brain and throughout your nervous system creating
a cause set in motion. The act of writing it down solidifies
the commitment as you have already commenced the effort towards
it’s achievement. Together with your collage, post this
list where you can read it all the time. This will keep you
focused on the things that you need to do.
Set a deadline
“Goals aren’t anything but dreams with deadlines…”
–famous writer
Once you have written it down. Select your top 10 goals and
put a due date against each one. It is ideal to dream big
however, setting mini milestones towards achieving bigger
ones will help make the process more manageable and would
avoid the feeling of being overwhelmed. Some goals may take
10 years to achieve and some goals may take 10 days. So whatever
it is choose a date in which to achieve it. A good rule of
thumb is the 1,3,5, 10+ rule. You could put the number 1 next
to all your one year goals and 3 next to the goals you wish
to achieve in three years and so on. What is important is
that you put down a specific date and as hit you hit each
target your self-confidence will grow.
Create a plan
Once you have decided on your 10 most important goals and
set a due date. It’s now time to create a plan for without
a plan, your goals a merely wishes. A speaker once said that
there is a thin line between faith and folly. Creating a plan
makes the realisation of any goal possible. Spend some time
brainstorming a plan, and list all the possibilities. Start
with the resources you already have, and then start looking
around you. Who do you know that can help you? Who could you
contact today that will get you closer to your goal? Define
all the steps that you need to do, define your roadblocks
and find solutions to break through these obstacles. Remember
to be flexible with your plan. Make adjustment if necessary
until you find a new solution. Creating a plan is your roadmap
as you journey towards your ultimate outcome.
Commit
Make commitment to achieving your goal and will help you
stay on track. It will also help you stick to your deadlines.
Let someone who you respect, and accountable to, know what
your goal is. Request this person to hold you to a higher
standard . Then do whatever it takes to stick to your promise.
The next step is schedule the actions your have set out in
your plan. This will avoid you from being distracted and commit
your time to the actions you need to take. Committing to your
goals will help you perform better.
Take action
This is the most important ingredient towards realising your
dreams. You can dream, wish and hope to your hearts content
but without any type of action there will be no result. There
is a famous saying that says: “faith works is dead”.
Action is needed in any great endeavour. Actions are causes
and the results are effects. Take a look at the action steps
in your plan and commit an action immediately. This will cause
you to take the next action, then the next action and so on.
Make a daily action list that you can do when you get every
morning. This is the momentum needed to turn your dreams into
reality.
Remember too that your goals will change as you grow in age
and wisdom. You will notice that what you thought you wanted
may not be worthy of pursuing. As you learn more about yourself
you may even realise that the goals that you have set you
for yourself not yours but some else’s. The essence
of accomplishment and living your purpose should still remains
in you. The greatest fulfillment is that your pursuit of your
goals also changes the lives of the people around you for
the better. Goals are merely things that will help you shape
your character. What really matters is not what you get rather
who you become as a person in the process. The process of
achieving goals achieving them gives you the confidence and
self-belief that could appreciate life in any form it presents
itself.
